Math in the City is a program and teaching style that comes out of New York. This fall I had the opportunity to visit a Math in the City school in Brooklyn, New York. From that day, I have been excited to add any Math in the City element that I can to my current math lessons. This program takes a project-based approach to everyday math lessons. In these pictures, my class partnered up to complete The Field Trip Picnic project. With this project they had to incorporate their knowledge of fractions and problem-solving skills while constructively working with their partner.

Veteran's Day
Reed participates in a very special event to honor veterans in our community. Every November 11th Reed puts together a student-led Veteran's Day assembly. It is a powerful morning for many reasons. First, students plan, create, and practice all of the different elements that go into the assembly. This allows Reed's students to take ownership, and to make a more personal connection to this special day. Second, students learn and witness the importance of honoring veterans. What is a veteran? What do they do for us? What would this country be like without our armed forces? These are just a few of the questions stems that spark meaningful conversations with our students. So by the time the assembly occurs Reed's students and staff are truly humbled to have them as our honored guests. Here are just a few pictures from that special day.

Halloween and Pumpkin Day
A couple of weeks ago 4H celebrated Pumpkin Day and Halloween. On Pumpkin Day students brought in a pie pumpkin and worked through lessons with the pumpkin all day long. Those lessons included these subject areas: math, writing, reading, science, and social studies. It was a great way to spend the day learning! Halloween fell on the following day, and we had a fabulous party planned by our parents. Below are a couple of pictures taken of 4H students after Reed's famous Halloween parade.

Fictional Writing Celebration
On Thursday we had our first writing celebration in 4H! It included every student sharing one piece out of the many that have been written over the past two months. The kids had fun with this as they were able to read into a fabulous microphone with voice activated lighting.
Check out the proud faces of our talented 4H writers!

Our First Service Learning Project
Last week the entire fourth grade collected money and school supplies for the kindergartners at Calvert Elementary in Houston, Texas! Basic supplies were requested by the kindergarten teachers, as hurricane Harvey inflicted so much destruction in their area. Reed's 4th graders came through and then some with the amount of care packages they were able to put together. In addition to organizing supplies and creating these care packages, Reed's 4th graders made cards and a banner for Calvert's kindergartners. Just a few weeks ago Reed celebrated National Character Day. We discussed different ways we could make a difference in the lives of others. With this project, we hope that were are able to give the kindergartners positive memories to start their educational career. It definitely resonated with us. Thank you to all that were able to donate!

4H's Cha-Cha
Last week I had the kids dance the Cha-Cha again. I taped the performance, and here it is...
This week 4th graders are partaking in a special service learning project for kindergartners at Calvert Elementary in Houston, Texas. Students will organize donated school supplies for each kindergartner and create a personal note for a special care package. A BIG thank you for all that have donated supplies! Look for pictures of this wonderful experience on my blog next weekend.
